Money in Trash

Pinays, especially the ones living outside the PH love money! Well, earning money to be more exact. We are careful with spending it, good at saving it and exceptional at looking for it!

One of the easiest way Pinays save and maybe earn an extra kroner is with recycling. Like me, every Pinay here see cans and bottles with Pant A, B or C as dollar signs. Instead of throwing away empty Coke bottles or beer cans in the bins we get to convert them to cash by bringing them to the recycling vending machines found at different supermarkets (i.e. Fotex, Lovberg, Rema, Netto, Aldi). I'm sure you've seen one of these machines on a video that went viral on Facebook. They give you 0.50 to 3.00 kroners for every empty can or bottle you deposit. The most I got from a filled up black trash bag is 150 kroners which is easily around 700 pesos.

Technically we're not really earning extra cash by doing this, we're just getting our money back for our recycling efforts. We've already paid for them at the grocery, we just get a part of it back when we recycle them. It's just like in Pinas when you buy a litro of Coke and manang will ask you to leave a deposit of 5 pesos which you'll get back if you return the empty bottle.

So how do Pinays earn the extra buck with this? Festivals of course! When Pinays go to festivals or concerts they don't go just to party. They make money on the side by picking up the empty cans other people throw or leave behind because they're either too drunk or they just don't care. That's hitting two birds with one stone right there. Though it's not just the Pinays who has the smarts to do this, tons of other people do this here too, young or old, Pinoy or Danish, you name it, they do it. Creates a win-win situation if you ask me. It's cashing in while saving mama Earth.
